Sugar Grove United Methodist Church
Brief History
The Sugar Grove Church was originally built in 1842. On Mother’s Day, 2011, there was a devastating fire that destroyed the church building. A few of the items were retrieved and refurbished – the pulpit, Communion tables, altar rail, to name a few. After much prayer and deliberation, it was decided to purchase additional land and rebuild the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church to the West of the original building and demolish the old church building. Two members of the church who are both building contractors formed a corporation and built our new building. Our first service was held on Mother’s Day, 2012 with the theme “To God be the Glory”.
The Sugar Grove Church is used as a gathering place for various occasions of worship, as well as a place for baby and wedding showers, our annual ice cream social, soup suppers, youth group activities, and weddings.
We are a mission-minded church, giving annually to the local HELP Center, Schuyler County Ministerial Association, Cunningham Children’s Home, UNICEF, and many more worthwhile projects.
The Sugar Grove Church today is a living symbol of the spiritual life of the people of this community as it has been for more than 150 years.
